Our Gospel this weekend reminds us that actions speak louder than words. Jesus tells a story about two sons. One says ‘no’ to his father but later changes his mind and does what he was asked. The other says ‘yes’ but never follows through. One way to understand this story and what it teaches is that obedience means doing, not just saying. How many times have we said ‘no’ to the Lord. And then guilt causes us to change. Maybe we refused to help the neighbor. But then seeing him struggle, we changed our minds and helped. Maybe it was a job at work that we didn’t do because we didn’t think we were paid enough. But then seeing everyone working changed our minds. Or how about the time we promised to do that favor for a friend? Then we found something more enjoyable to do, and never followed through. All the readings this week point to the same truth: God looks at our hearts and our choices. It is not enough to say we believe. We must live what we believe.
It is the same way with sin and forgiveness. Turning away from sin and choosing what is right brings life and hope. These readings, like the last couple of weeks, show that God is fair and merciful. He wants us to turn back when we make mistakes. When we admit we are wrong and try again. He welcomes us with love. Repentance opens the way to peace and joy in His presence.
