Today’s Gospel will bother a lot of people, even make some a bit uncomfortable. In today’s society, people follow the principle of doing or giving for what they are paid. You might hear words like, “they don’t pay me enough for what I do” or “I’m not doing anything more than the bare minimum.” Can you imagine if God worked on those same principles? Do you think He would have carried that cross? Would he have miraculously fed the multitudes? Would he have cured so many? Nobody paid Him. All he got at that time was to be crucified! But today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s generosity. He doesn’t give as today society judges. He gives it all to everyone who comes to Him. Whether we are a cradle Catholic from birth or someone who finds the Lord later in life and converts in faith or someone on their dying bed finds Jesus, God is there. That is a concept we all need to understand and follow. See someone in need, be helpful. See someone hurting, offer support. See someone lost, offer direction. It doesn’t matter who, or when, or circumstance. All that matters is to be generous as the Lord is to us. The Lord in the Gospel asks: “Are you envious because I am generous?” Let us all be generous too.
