This particular story of Jesus multiplying the loaves and fishes is seen six times throughout the Gospels. Each is a little different, but basically the same: a miracle of Jesus feeding a multitude of people. However, when I read this Gospel this week, a particular line really stood out. The disciples said to Jesus to dismiss the crowds so they can go their way and get something to eat. Jesus responded: “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves.” Those are words I feel Jesus says to us all.
My mother would always say to us, God helps those who help themselves. I always wondered. Of all those 5,000 people how many brought some food with them? Food that could be shared with everyone so that everyone got at least a little. We have so many people who go hungry, many of which are too proud to ask for help. Some just don’t know where or how to get help. There are also many who have in abundance, and maybe not even be aware of the needs of their own neighbor. We can pray for a miracle and ask Jesus to feed the poor of our world. But as He said in the Gospel, give them some food yourselves.
There are food pantries and soup kitchens all over the Poconos, and that’s just our area. Reach out. Donate some food. But, even more so, check on a neighbor who may really be hurting and hungry. Give them some food yourselves. It’s the least we can do.
