When I read this Gospel, I thought of an old adage: ‘There is a little bit of bad in the best of us and there is a little bit of good in the worst of us.” But still we all try to eliminate the bad (weeds) around us even though Jesus says it’s not that easy. We may pull out the wheat (the good) and thus hurt someone who is trying their best to be helpful and kind. We may not even recognize the wheat (the good) because we don’t always understand the thoughts and implications of those offering their help. Jesus doesn’t call us to be ‘weeders.’ Remember another scene when Jesus said, “Let he without sin cast the first stone.” Jesus does remind us in today’s parable to be patient and non-judgmental. He doesn’t want us to be self-righteous and arrogant especially of those who are different. He does ask us to be kind, considerate, helpful, forgiving and thankful. Our heavenly Father is in charge and we must not rush to judgement. His kingdom will continue to grow slowly, steadily and surprisingly. Let God separate the weeds from the wheat.
