I was thinking about this beautiful season of Advent. And it came to me, that advent is like a compass. The compass is always pointing North. To me, that means it is always pointing toward Jesus & heaven. In a way, that’s where Advent is pointing: the birth of Jesus and His final coming to decide our eternal lives. But that same compass can direct you in other directions leading to good places. We follow one direction and we find ourselves looking for gifts and presents for family and friends. We follow a different direction and we find ourselves worrying about Christmas dinner and who will be attending. And if you go the other direction, we start contemplating time off from work, school, and our usual routines. After all, it’s Christmas. All of us during this Advent season will be running in many different directions and doing many different things. But as the compass always points north, Advent always points to Jesus. He is the reason why we buy the gifts, plan the family dinners and get the time off from work. He is the one that sets the tone for being kind, helpful, generous and forgiving. It is Jesus’ birthday we celebrate. So remember to say Merry Christmas and not happy holidays.
