Did you ever notice how many times we make excuses for things we don’t want to do? I don’t mean valid reasons why we shouldn’t do something, but excuses why we don’t want to do some things. Today’s Gospel tell us to love one another. Jesus then gives us an example of what that means: “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” This is where the excuses come in. I can’t love … Do you know what they did? I can’t love … they didn’t help when I asked. I can’t love … did you hear what they said? I can go on and on with excuses why not to love. But Jesus is the only needed reason why we should love one another. He taught us how to treat one another: Do unto others … He taught us how to forgive: turn the other cheek or forgive seven times seventy times… He taught us how to sacrifice: He died on the cross: no greater love than to lay down one’s life… If we truly say we are Christians and want to be disciples (followers) of Jesus, then we need to love one another with no excuses to the contrary.
