Imagine being given $86,400 for one day. But by the end of the day, the is money is gone. So you have to spend the whole amount each day. What would you do? What would you spend it on?
We may not get the money each day, but we do get its equivalent in time. Each day is 86,400 seconds to live. It’s gone at the end of day and at any moment it could all be just taken away. What do you do with all these seconds?
Today’s parable tells of the ten virgins and how only five were prepared for the king to arrive, when he came unexpectedly. Do we spend our time thinking only of ourselves? Or do we think about the needs of others and how to be kind, helpful and compassionate? Do we try to accumulate all kinds of material things? Or are we generous with what we have? Do we take the time to talk with God? Or do we put Him off until we need Him?
As the Gospel says, “Stay awake, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
